Introducing Interpreter: real-time translation for participant appointments
Every caseworker who works in a linguistically diverse area has experienced it. A participant arrives for their appointment and does not speak English. The adviser has two options: reschedule until an interpreter is available, or try to get through the conversation with gestures, and a translation app on someone's phone which lacks security and brings up data protection issues.
Neither option is good enough. Rescheduling delays support that the participant needs now. Muddling through means the adviser misses critical information about that person's barriers, skills, and goals. And in some cases, participants bring family members to translate.
Interpreter services are expensive and typically need 48 hours' notice to book. For drop-in sessions, unplanned appointments, or programmes operating across dozens of sites, that model does not scale. The people who need language support most often receive it last.
What Interpreter does
Interpreter is a real-time, two-way translation tool built into the Earlybird platform. It supports 90+ languages and dialects, and lets advisers and participants speak in their own languages and understand each other instantly during appointments. It is built for citizen services teams and providers working with multilingual communities.
The flow is simple. The adviser selects the participant's language. Two buttons appear on screen, one for each language. The adviser holds their button, speaks in English, and lets go. Interpreter then translates their words and plays them aloud in the participant's language. When the participant responds, they hold their button, speak in their language, and the adviser hears the translation in English. Both parties can also see the text translation of what they have said to ensure complete accuracy.
What this means for service delivery
For advisers, Interpreter removes the single biggest practical barrier to serving multilingual participants. First appointments happen on time, drop-in sessions become accessible, because the tool is available instantly on any device. And the quality of the conversation improves, because customers can express themselves fully in their own language rather than struggling through limited English.
For providers and programme managers, the maths changes too. Interpreter costs come down because the feature is included as part of the Earlybird subscription. Booking administration disappears and compliance improves, because conversations captured through the platform are documented and auditable.
For participants, the experience is more dignified. They speak in the language they are most comfortable with. They do not need to bring a family member. They do not need to repeat themselves or worry about being misunderstood. They can share sensitive information, about their health, their housing, their employment history, with the confidence that it is being accurately communicated to the person trying to help them in a highly secure environment.

Earlybird Interpreter is live and available to all Earlybird users as part of the platform, with support for 90+ languages and dialects. There is no separate setup required.
